These are the folk songs that are sung by women during the initiation ritual (Janeu or Upanayana) in the Bhadwar village of Bihar. The recordings were made with an intention to create a sonic landscape of the event.The rite of passage leads the person being initiated to take the first step towards the path of devotion: the essence of the Vedas.

The songs are in a chronological sequence, in the order they were sung. The album is part of a project for safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage of India through the practice of visual anthropology.
